Daniel Schneider, Graduate Student of Industrial Archaeology, Michigan Technological University, will be discussing the industrial archaeology of the die-stamp machine currently on display at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum.  The die-stamp machine was used to create wood decorative borders for printing.  Through digital slides, artifacts, and letterpress printed interpretive materials Schneider will explore the nature of knowledge that is rooted in tactile experience as well as the transformation of artisan woodworking skills within the context industrialization. He will share the human story, garnered from oral history interviews with former Hamilton employees, of the dexterity and calibration needed to produce intricate decorative patterns with this industrial die-stamp machine.
